No way, dude!

If they switch to U.S. then we'd have to get U.S. money for out Canadian and I'll bet both gov't will work it so the average joe is cheated on exchange and CIBC and Scotia will make all the coin (before they sellout to Citibank *yuck*).

Canadians are poor already, and the economy is not that healthy as always. If we switched to US dollars, then we will have to live with the economy of the US.... look at a good example of Hong Kong, HK dollars are locked at 7.8 to 1 US dollars, and now the US stock market is in slump, so as the Hong Kong economy... pretty scary.

By the way there's only ONE color for US currency, which I think it's a very inconvinece thing. I went to US for vacation several times and I was having hard time in using cash.

Great, so we're the country with "Monopoly Money"... It would probably be cheaper to use a single coloured dye to produce our money. I honestly don't care what it looks like, as long as its legal tender.

Personally, I like the new $10.

However, I think it was a mistake to keep printing the money on paper. Has anyone here been to Australia. Their money is similar to ours in that it's multi-coloured. However, it's printed on a plastic material and also has a transparent "window". The see-through aspect makes counterfeiting incredibly difficult and the plastic makes the bills far more durable. Fewer bills need to be minted to replace ruined money and that offsets the higher production costs. Each denomination is also slightly different in size, this being beneficial to the seeing impaired (I believe braille is included as well).
Yeah, I realize plastic isn't exactly enironmentally friendly, but how many trees are required to keep us supplied in paper cash? And if your dog buries your wallet, there's a better chance your money will survive.

That plastic money's gotta be a little hard to get in your wallet, though ... and I thought my wallet was thick now after payday!!

One bonus of our low dollar is that retailers typically can't bring stuff up here and sell it at straight exchange..we wouldn't buy it. Wholesalers must sell to Canadian business at a lower cost...DVDs always seem to be a better deal here in Canada. A lot of electronics seem to be cheaper up here, too.

Also, when you sell stuff on eBay, the exchange is great!!

Actually, when I was travelling there, I didn't really notice the difference.

Why would we switch? I would make more money if they kept the same dollar value, but i doubt it. So in US dollars (at todays estimated coversion rate of 1.5 to 1 i'd be a 14.00 an hour worker and pay more for goods (based on us prices).. Hope that day never comes..

Well, I'll pretend this post is about a common North American currency and not a misinformed opinion about the pending hostile takeover by those dastardly hoodlums south of our border.

In which case, a common currency would probably be a natural progression to the NAFTA. I am not sure how the European Union's common currency is faring, however I think a buck, is a buck. is a buck. Don't get me wrong, I am a true Canadian loyalist and our coloured money rocks, however cash (the folding kind) is being phased out.

The only time I use cash is at the Ortons', when I pay for my XL java, lotsa' muck and one sugar.

When cash is history, another barrier will fall and we'll be that much closer. How the transition happens is beyond the scope of my knowledge, however, I am possitive about one thing. We WILL get screwed in the end, so to speek!

EU currency is Euro not French Franc , British pound , Deutch Mark and so on.... why should we give up our Loonie ?
Let's have an "Americo" as a Nort Am currency and every country get's to keep their own symbols coloured or not

Since we're talking money here... I wonder why on earth we still use pennies? Or nickles for that matter... I mean, I understand why the U.S. still use 'em, as they are super-conservative when it comes to their money, but up here you'd think we'd see the light and stop minting these useless coins.

In Sweden, the lowest denomination is 50 ore (0.5 krona) which is approximately 8 cents, so I don't see why we wouldn't be able to live with 10 cents being the lowest denomination. I know we'de definetely be able to live with 5 cents being the lowest denomination.

Oh, and does anyone know if any organization representing the blind or otherwise seeing impaired has ever brought up the issue of visual recognition of our money? I know we're all proud of the different colours of our paper money, but to have them be nearly exactly the same size is down right silly. If they all had different length and width, like many European countries, it'd be a lot easier recognizing them by touch.
