Hi everyone,

My current 21" hitachi is not cutting it anymore. It gives off enough heat to keep my room warm in winter and in the summer .. don't ask :P

I've been looking around for a 18" LCD with DVI , good contrast and a low pixel response time (<25). Its seems that the prices of LCD's in Canada are way too high compared to those in the states. Add the taxes and I begin to wonder if I are better off ordering 2 15" LCD's instead.

Does anyone know where to get LCD's in Canada at a decent price?

Thanks

Adnaan

Netlink's got a 17" NEC refurb for $800.

18" panels are disproportianately more expensive that the 17"s .... (the only 18" on the above page is $1800 )

Too bad you don't have a US address or a friend in the States. Recently there was a 20" Dell LCD for $1089 USD shipped! Deals in the States are so much better...

15" LCD has 108 in^2
17" LCD has 138.7 in^2
18" LCD has 155.5 in^2
21" CRT, 20" viewable has 192 in^2

dual 15" LCD has 216 in^2

I'd go with a dual 15" LCD analog. You get more screen area, and they are cheaper than DVI.

Do you need DVI? Do you have a video card that will support a DVI hookup? If you are not into gaming at all, I would recommend the Matrox G550. I use it and it is truely the king of dual monitor implemenation. You can get this card with dual dvi connectors if you so desire. It comes standard with a dvi connector for the second monitor, but includes an adaptor to connect to a standard VGA monitor.

Lowest price I've seen for an 18" LCD is the NEC 1850E for $1,200, but that isn't the DVI version.

I just bought a pair of IBM T750 17" LCDs, but alas they're for two different PCs The T750 has DVI, however it's relatively expensive at $1,500. FWIW, IBM has them on sale now (to end of June?) for a mere $1,200 if bought with a NetVista desktop. (I paid even less, but I have "connections." )

From all the reading that I did, DVI is still in its infancy. Few PCs have DVI output. Video cards with VDI are generally expensive, so you pay more for both the card and the display. And the quality of analog video cards has improved to such an extent that some "experts" believe they're now as good as DVI anyway.

If you're looking for an inexpensive 17" (no DVI), the Samsung 760V is on sale at Office Depot for $999.

The dual 15" are good unless you need to work on 1024*768 graphic apps/images at full res. All your resolution with 2x15"LCD is spread horizontally accross 768 vertical pixels. For working on XGA images (in Photoshop, Director, etc.) you need a greater than XGA monitor.

LCD Monitor Technology A Buyers Guide [PDF]

Digital Interface vs. Analog Interface: LCD monitors, like CRTs, generally use a standard analog VGA interface to connect to the computer. Many LCDs also have an option for a digital connection (Digital Visual Interface known as DVI). A digital interface requires that both the graphics card and the monitor support the digital connection. Theoretically the digital connection will produce a better signal that can be transported over a longer distance, but the benefits over an analog connection may not be immediately observable.

The DVI standard is still evolving and unfortunately there are several versions of DVI on the market today.
· DVI-D. Supports "digital only" monitors.
· DVI-A. Supports "analog only" monitors
· DVI-I. Supports both digital and analog monitors.

Mating the correct video card, cable and monitor is imperative to produce an image on the screen.

Size: Bigger isn't necessarily better. For a given resolution a larger LCD creates a larger image, but will have a looser pixel pitch. All things being equal, smaller LCD screens, for a given resolution, will produce better image quality because of its tighter pixel pitch. Smaller LCD screen sizes generally come with a lower price as well. If you are considering an 18-inch 1280x1024 LCD monitor, consider a 17.4-inch or 17-inch monitor instead.

Just found a Sony 18" at eCost for $779.00 US and there seems to be a $100 rebate for that LCD.

I need the monitor for coding (70%) and gaming (30%).

OfficeDepot has a ViewSonic 18" for $949.99 http://www.officedepot.com/shop/cat...24BL3&PP=14

There's a 15% off coupon floating around somewhere which would drop the price to $807.49.

There's also a $100 rebate http://www.viewsonic.com/pdf/REBATE_LR_LCD.pdf

Roughly, $655.59 before taxes....shipping would be free.

$465 - 15% coupon = $395.25
- $100 rebate = $245

$465 is the price on the US site... At OfficeDepot.ca, it tells me "This item is not available at your location".

Until you try to add it to your cart "0 of 1 item was added."

Try "add to List" and get "NOTE: This item is not available at your location. "

Rotten. I couldn't really afford it anyways....
