With the moderator's permission, I would like to post this here, I orginally posted it in the "thinking outside the bowl" section, but noticed not very many had even viewed it. Time is running out for this girl and I figured more would see it here.

Petition to sign for release of 19 year old Iranian girl set to be executed for stabbing man to death while he tried to rape her and her 16 year old cousin. Received this link from a story on the CTV.ca website, you can read more about the story as it develops, and sign the petition at:

I've won once from Quick & Simple which is open to both but I think(?) that's it. You're right, the odds aren't good!

Does anyone happen to remember anything about the Todays Parent Playtex Baby contest? Got a call that I may have won a secondary prize but I can't remember what the contest was and can't find it anywhere. Thanks

I live in a town of 505 in the middle of Saskatchewan and won the Pfalsgraff dinnerware set, a adult collector's car and a couple of other prizes that were for the US and Canada. You can't win if you don't enter! Someone's got to win, why not one of us

I won quick and simple in Nov.
Just remember if you win a US prize you have to pay PST & GST on the Canadian value of the prize and a $5.00 postal fee.
$100 US = a $20 fee

that's odd

anybody any money at all.

Not odd really.

The
law states that duty must be paid, but there are simply too many packages crossing the border daily for them to check every single one.

It's a hit and miss system. It is the same with anything you buy on eBay or simply buy from a US company by phone or online. Sometimes you get the custom charges and sometimes you don't.

I've only been charged once in 5 packages coming across the border, but my brother, who orders a lot of stuff from the US, says he gets dinged about 25% of the time.

Hope that helps.

You could always try emailing them or calling before they ship your prize and have them check off gift on the customs forms and that way you will not have to pay any fees at all !!

When I was trading beanie babies about 1 in 10 use to cost me a couple of dollars to get them. I think it all depends on who handles the package and how busy they are that day.

That statement is not entirely accurate. Please verify your source if you are relying on this method of getting goods across the border.

I know that when I buy items on ebay that when I have them shipped to me I always check to confirm that they will ship it as a gift and I have never had to pay any fees at all ...... only a couple of times when they messed up and forgot to check off gift!!
It might work differently when you win a prize but it is definatly worth a try!

On most stuff coming across the border from an american company you will have to pay at least the taxes and the $5.00 customs charge.

I have had stuff shipped from companies as a gift and still had to pay. My friend use to mail me stuff from work and I almost always had to pay even though it was a gift. She finally figured it out and started using her home addy for mail then it was better.

You can try and get it back but it is very seldom that you will win an appeal on taxes and duty think I only won once and that was when I forgot my glasses at her house and she mailed them to me. I had to send proof that they were bought here and not down there.
