Interesting article mbg. Personally I think more school boards should take this stand.

Stop feeding your kids McDonald's for every meal and they won't be so darn fat. Parents should have common sense and feed their children properly. My parents were by no means rich, but we ate a healthy, well-balanced diet and I'm currently at approximately my ideal weight and have been all my life. Parents need to take more responsibility in the raising of their children. (I fully expect to get flamed for this opinion).

Why would anyone speak badly of your opinion? I agree, with yuo, if kids eat healthily they will be healthy.

There is currently a lawsuit to ban Oreo cookies.

I completely applaud this effort. They are nothing but poison pills for your kids. It should not end there either. Girl Guide cookies which, while they are for a good cause, are just as bad.

We've "been there" on this subject before ronnie. I was told that I was nothing more than a glorified "Martha" because I do not allow my kids to eat junk food and they actually get the recommended 5-10 servings of fruit and veggies... <sigh>.....

The first thread got locked due to high tensions. The second thread seemed to die off about last September.

Did anyone see on CTV news last night how ontario school boards are "combating" obesity? Raising the rental rates of gyms/fields to outrageous amounts in order to fill their coffers.. Ridiculous and retarded.. Rental of a schoo gym after hours went from $3k/year to 60k, and rental of a soccer field went from $0 to $27k..

Now that is forward thinking!

There are very few fat kids at my kids schools which is kind of surprising considering how much junk they sell there.

Every Wednesday is hotdog day (they sell hotdogs, chips and icecream!).

Every other monday is pizza day.

About once a month is crazy bread day.

Plus various classes are always having bakes sales and selling chocolate bars etc.

They also reward them on special days (trackmeets, clean up day, etc) with popsicles.

And it seems there is always someone in class having a birthday and bringing cupcakes for the class.

Of course sports are really big here and most kids are in something.

plumlucky, what happens often in cases like these, is that currently (and fortunately), the kids are burning as much energy as they are consuming. But most people that I know (and I'm talking about 90% of my friends that I've known from University) gained all their weight after highschool. The problem is that they keep eating the same junk they did as kids (+beer lol), but don't exercise as much, plus, your metabolism slows down as you age. So eventually, it catches up with them. So once people are use to a way of eating, it is very difficult to change. I see people my age (30s) trying really hard to correct years of bad eating habits. And so far, I can only think of one person that succeeded, others are probably going to be attempting to diet all their lives.

So even if kids 'look' healthy, they might be far from it. A 10 year old boy who smokes will still appear healthy and not show any signs of cancer, but check again in 20 years. We're a very reactive society. We wait until the problem is right in our faces before fixing it. (and often don't).

This comment is not for plumlucky, just a generaly rant. Just because people look healthy, doesn't mean they are. Kids that eat like what we've described above have greater chances at heart disease and other problems.

Many health problems that we have today we've created ourselves.

*HOORAY!!* WTG, CSK'sMom! So few parents actually pay attention to what their kids eat these days that it is nice to see someone who believes in REAL food.
