That's really a lousy situation to be in Ash -- you were darned if you did pay the money and quite possibly darned if you didn't. I think you took the safe way out tho - look at this way -- your win is the start of more to come -- hopefully postage prepaid to you. A win is a win - personally I don't think you should have to pay for anything when you win. I wouldn't have paid either!!

Ash, email the company (Parents.com) and maybe they'll resend it but they'll pay the duty. Its worth a try, if it came UPS, they're buggers for charging the fees.

Not to totally freak anyone out but actually there's quite a bit of things they can do with your driver's license info. For one, they can go to the ministry, say they've lost their license, and ask for a new one. Because they don't have one right on hand they will issue them a new one right on the spot. Most of the time it's just a paper one, but I have known cases where (I'm not sure how), people were issued proper ones with their pictures on it. They will normally go and say they found the original a couple of days later, and cancel the new one from being sent out.
They can use this to get other info, like getting your SIN #, (they go and say their wallet was stolen with all their ID in it), it will be given to them, at least a temp card will.
They can also apply for credit at stores that have instant credit, eg...Canadian Tire, & Zellers.
Things have become a little harder since 9/11, but even birth certificates have been obtained through doing this, although not often, just depends on how stupid the clerk is.
I stress here, that this is rare but definately can happen, identity theift is a major crime, and being done so much lately it isn't even funny. I know about all this stuff because in 1992, my husband's wallet was stolen, or lost, and they did exactly what I described above, including getting instant credit from Canadian Tire. Even though he signed an afadavid and gave them other documents proving it was not him who obtained the credit, they still came after us, and left it on his credit for 7 years (These people are jerks/Canadian Tire that is!!).
Also I know about this stuff, because my husband and I have done a lot of investigation work, and we've seen it done to many people. Like I said thought since 9/11 it has become more difficult for preditors to obtain certain info or documents, like a birthcertificate, but who want's to take a chance.
Sorry I really don't mean to scare anyone, really I don't, but I thought you should be aware that things could be done.

Oh! that is sad, I've never heard where you would have to pay S&H for your prize and custom fees. I would send them an email and complain over that one. I wonder if it was some kind of slip-up. Good luck and send in your thanks for nothing%^&*

There seems to be a lot of talk about some fishies giving out D/L #/s but Oh well! whats done is done. Everyday we give out numerous times, address, birthdate ages of kids and sometimes more just to get freebies. I think each and everytime you give out anything you take the chance that someone somewhere could take advantage of your information but that is what this world has come to. My ID was taken just from buying gas at a gas station so there you go.

Giving out my licence number bothered me a bit too, but I really don't have any credit left to take and it's easily done. We moved from one house and even after final readings, etc., the guy who moved in got the gas restored in my husband's name and we were getting overdue notices for that residence. He literally stole his identity with Union Gas and Union Energy just by calling and saying that he was renting from us. It's easily done.

Holy crap! What a bastard! It really sucks that people have to do stuff like that. No one could get anything from me, either. I'm totally broke.

I think everyone should just remember that some freebies aren't worth giving out some information

Just to clarify on this one... To get a "verification" of SIN# they would require the actual license card. The pic is checked to make sure it looks like them, and they must answer "skill testing questions" from the SIN database to get it. The "verif" is a paper receipt stating that so and so has been issued the following #.

That happened to me once also. It was a charge for duty. I had remembered what the prize was, and it wasnt worth the duty charge for me so I sent it back. I wonder what they wrote on the customs slip...that may make a difference. Maybe ask if they can re-send it with "sample of merchandise', or 'gift' on the customs slip...then theres no duty.
