I was at best buy, and saw that they have two 760 watt amps, a Sony and Pioneer for $250 each. I want to upgrade the amp in my car, and these are really good prices. Any opinions on these amps? FWIW, I have a Pioneer Premier DEH-4400 CD player which I love. I've also heard that Sony's are overrated and tend to overheat quite a bit ...

Neither IMO.

Suggest buying used or increasing your budget.

At slightly under your price range, I bought a used Concept CC-1002 amp...does 2x100WRMS @ 4 ohms, 2x170WRMS @ 2, 1x300WRMS @ 4, or 1x500WRMS @ 2.

I tend to like MTX, Alpine ... among others. Hey, Xmas is coming around the corner so there should be some great deals in the near future.

I'm just looking for something to power my subwoofer ... In this case I'm not concerned about the quality of sound. Even if the Pioneer is overrated, its still much better than the one I have, which is also Pioneer.

If $250 is the regular price then I'll hold off.

You can find a great sub amp for less than 250 i'm sure. Bridged into one channel you can get great results. In any case, Xmas time makes for great sales as I mentioned before. Watch for the sales.
