Trying to find the cheapest DVD player (and one that won't break down after month) for a friend's Xmas gift.

I know the Nova DVD is $39.99 at Futureshop
the one with Progressive scan is $44.99

I think Walmart has one for $48.99

and Factorydirect.ca has 2 for $44.99

Now my deliema is how good are these players?
anyone have any recommendations?
any place that is actually cheaper?
etc... etc...

You missed Dell's Deal today at $29.99

I'd go for the Wal-Mart unit for one reason: You can return it for exchange or refund and it has a 1-year in-store warranty.

As to which model is "better," it all depends on what you plan to do with it. If it's just to play commercial DVD that you've bought or rented, they'll all do that reasonably well.

I've purchased the one from Walmart during their 10th anniversary sale. It's not the most sophisticated machine, but it plays dvds.

It's a little slow in the upstart, but it's great for the kid's tv room.

And if you have any problems, you have a one year warranty.

I was an early adopter of the format and paid over $700 for my dvd player, but it has many features that most players don't have today.

Ok, it doesn't play mp3, jpegs or cdrs, or even progressive scan, but it's still a great machine

cool thanks! I was also an early adapter.
one of my friends doesn't have a region 1 dvd player. so I'm thinking I'll pick up a dvd player for her.
my friend recommended Nova since he had one for a while now and no real problems.
yeah I'm going to still wait for that last week to find some mega deals
