Has the wave of violence disuaded any of you from entering contests in which the prize is a trip to Mexico? (I recently heard that the total number of deaths -tourists- in Mexico since 2009 is 45,000, it seems steep but I have no intention of visiting Mexico any time soon)

don't let that scare you....i was in cancun mexico 3 yrs ago..we stayed close to our hotel, did not venture into night clubs at night..and took guided daily tours on buses. if you mind your p's and q's you will be alright...a friend of mine goes down to mexico every year...for 4 months..has a house down there..drives back and forth on the baja peninsula..she returns safely..and another friend who also goes down to another part of mexico...smaller towns i believe are sleepier and friendlier and safer..he and his wife go down for one month every year...my advice, use your own common sense, just do not be in the areas where drugs are being exchanged..downtown, out of the way places, don't go out drinking at night to clubs, people can get into fights then unintentionally..have a safe drink at your hotel instead..and don't go walking at night in areas you do not know..well you get the drift..and that is wise advice that goes for any country..not just mexico!
