Anyone who has this installed on their machine at work, may want to read this article.

up to 30 years in jail

This is a US case but the laws reguarding ownership of networks, computing equipment and its use, isn't that much different in Canada.

PS. My heartfelt sympathy for those of you who have lost loved ones to cancer. I am currently undergoing treatment, I have beaten the beast and have many years left. Thanks to all of you who are trying to help find a way to stop the beast.

I wouldn't worry about the criminal aspect, but the installation of unauthorized software on a work computer is grounds for termination regardless of what the software is. So although I wouldn't worry about the criminal aspect, people should think twice before they install software on their computers at work.

Show me the company who needs this kind of publicity....

Toronto Sun (fictive front page)

..... Inc CEO decided to follow the legal action against employee involved in Cancer research for using network resources during the night.
Mr. John Doe is facing 30 years in jail for charity work.....

You would never see that headline. The newspapers have better things to do. The criminal aspect is ridiculous, but the employer aspect is not. No one should install unauthorized software on their employers computers. Personally, I would fire any one of my staff for it.

Go out and canvass, donate some money. $500 can buy a computer these days. Your employer's computers are not yours to use for anything but work.

Do you really consider using someone else's property, charitable? What the employee is really doing is stealing their employer's resources. That's not charity.

Losing members isn't always a bad thing.

The two of us that are retired, talked it over with the boss. We now have 15+ machines running at the office. His condition was that we form our own team such that he can see what his contribution is.

What we need now, is for an inventive method to "write off" the donated time and power on the company taxes.

It's great that there a bunch of people willing to donate their time and PCs for this great cause, but also a little disappointing considering how many of us joined in on the Molsons contest.

I know it looks depressing when an old computer takes a day and a half to return 1 result but I look at it that it is one less result that needs to be found!

I hope that a few more bowlmates will consider helping out.

Zen.
