I just flew on West Jet today and have the magazine right here and I'd have to agree

When a contest is for a trip for 4....2 adults and 2 children under 12, will they award it to 2 adults only? Or can you pay to upgrade to 4 adults?

Good Morning Tea! I wondered that too. Probably the best thing to do is go to the contest and locate the contact info and email your questions. I would imagine that it is up to the sponsor and that each contest/situation is different. Good Luck!

Trip contests can be tricky however when you win a contest for two adults and two kids it is because of the hotel room as the airplane fares are the same for kids and adults unless they have gotten some kind of deal(usually to Disneyland).

I know people that have won a family contest for four and taken only two adults but you have to remember that you in essence have forfeited part of the prize. Perhaps part of a prize someone else would have loved to use. There are lots of trip contests for two to focus on.

The other thing to be careful about is to expect that if you don't want to go on the trip that the company make you some kind of substution. Sometimes they will sometimes they won't. Making sure you can actually go on the trip is important in terms of being able to get a passport, being able to travel( in terms of childcare, eldercare, vacation time, etc) are considerations.

When we won a Disneyland trip we had to buy for one extra. It cost close to $1000 with the airfare, health insurance, and other things that were not covered.

Trip wins are rarely 100% free with all expenses covered.

Agreed. Also, keep in mind it often includes 2 kids because sometimes hotels run specials like kids stay and eat free when travelling with an adult so to upgrade to 2 adults it would be like paying for 2 adults to go somewhere less the airfare which i think kids also get discounts.

You should always look at trip dates too because there are a lot of contests that are very last minute. For example my sister won a trip and they called the week before departure to notify her of the win. Luckily we had passports because otherwise I don't think there would have been enough time to get them!

I had a trip win for 2 adults, 2 kids. I asked if I could turn the 2 kids one into one adult. They said i could do 4 adults. It was fine.

This was on the train (with single rooms for each person) and a hotel stay. 2 double beds. The hotel said the 2 beds are there anyways, so if I wanted 4 adults in there, it was fine. Food was included on the train. VIA rail was excellent when it came to customer service and making sure the trip was perfect.

i won a trip as you stated..the 'kids' i wanted to take were my young bro and sis who were in their 20's! the 'kids' stated on the form was for under 12..i asked them if i could take my adult siblings.and they said..and told me they woud charge extra which they did..BUT I was happy to pay ( yeah for credit cards.....;-)) and take my two siblings on a 'paid' holiday which they were not only surprised but ecstatic to go and had an absolutely fabulous memorable time! so it never hurts to ask the promo company for 'any differences' that might be worked out! all they can say is no eh! ;-))

Kids might get a discount for an airline/hotel special other than that the airfare is exactly the same. We have done alot of travelling with kids over the last couple of years and got no deal on the airfare.

The other thing is if you have to add people it simply costs more such as five not four. We had to pay full airfare on the one ticket to Disneyland as our kids were younger and we wanted to go together. Now that they are older one of us would likely fly on a cheaper flight.
