I'm wondering if anyone has had this happen before. I came home from errands to find a message on my answering machine saying 'To claim your prize press nine". It was an automated message. I'm wondering if it kicked in as soon as my answering machine answered the phone which is why I would only get part of the message. In general do they usually try a couple of times to reach you or do you only get one chance?

There aren't usually so many prizes in a contest that they would set up an automated system for claiming them. Usually either they e-mail you or they phone in person, often with a skill-testing question.
This sounds more like a sales scam (alarm-system or time-shares are the big ones that claim you "won" something) If it's a legitimate contest they should contact you again.

i often find a message on my answering machine with a woman gushing "you've just won all all inclusive trip to the caribbean, to claim your prize press nine" I understand this is linked to a phone scam that can charge you with exorbident long distance bills if you press nine on a phone with mulitle lines, like at an office, because when you dial nine it takes you to an outside line. I'm not sure exactly how it works, all i knowis that most people at home are fine though and all it is is a nuisance and a bit of a dissapointment.

BE VERY CAREFUL with this type of so called SCAM!...HANG UP AND DO NOT PUSH 9!!!! sometimes that sends you to an out of country telephone LINE and while they are talking at you ..automatically even....they are STEALING YOUR PHONE TIME at about $20 a minute..so DON'T DO IT! NO contests judging organizations will call you like this about ANY CONTEST! Please be wary!! If it is a contest..they will do one of two things..leave a message ( some do..some don't) and they will cally back..you will see in many rules it states..they will try back a certain amount of times...they want you to win eh...so don't worry about this one..it was NOT a win and a SCAM for sure!!!!

if yo do phone, make sure you point out that in canada, we do NOT pay taxes or any costs on prizes
they will prob hang up on you or ask if you have such and such a credit card
never give out cc information to any of these bozos

Besides, even if it was legitimate (which I am sure it is NOT) two airline tickets to Honolulu without the other expenses is not such a great prize unless you are going anyway. This is one of the most expensive places you can find as far as hotel and meals are concerned and the package deals (air+hotel) are a better bargain.
For what just the hotel would cost in Hawaii it would be cheaper to buy an all-inclusive package (hotel, airfare, meals, drinks, activities) somewhere else like Mexico, Dominican Republic.
