Since when did Tronno end at the 401 to the north and DVP to the east? Indeed, one of the communities that's ailing the most from the SARS scare is Scarberia, which is outside of Exxon's Tronno. My Tronno goes north to Steeles and east to Port Union Rd.

I'd boycott Exxon over this if I didn't already boycott Exxon for other reasons

Petrocan (at lest the one at Leslie and York mills) has lowered their price to 49.9 too.

Yabbut on my drive home a few minutes ago it was still 62.5 at the Exxons on Steeles/Don Mills and Leslie/Cummer. I live and work north of 401. I didn't see anything below 61.x.

Guess news travels slowly north of the 401

I skipped this sale after seeing the line-ups - people really can lose it for a buck or three.

I paid 61.5 cents/litre on Thursday - if my 42 litre tank was bone dry, my savings would have been $4.91, not counting the gas used to drive south of the 401 and for idling time in those line-ups.

It does however, show how the gas companies can wave their magic wands and drop the price. I'd say it was more a post-war celebration than SARS related (qv: Bylo's point about Scarborough) - they probably need a tax write-off to counter some of those windfall profits coming down the pipe...

I am in favour of high gas prices -- bring on $1/litre, but I don't want this to happen if the excess is oil company profit. It should be going to taxes.

Yabbut, as I understand it, the bulk of gas taxes aren't being used to repair roads and related infrastructure nor are they used to subsidize mass transit, nor to devleop alternative fuels and transportation strategies that would spare the environment from the ravages of fossil fuels.

Even the excise tax on gas that was justified to eliminate the national deficit is still in force even though we've been running budget surpluses for the past several years.

Tax reform is a separate issue, really. I'm just saying that gas prices should be higher than they are now, and the excess money should be diverted to taxes rather than corporate profits. That will get the movement off on the right foot.

What about gas prices in the US? There are significantly more automobiles there, and as I understand it, cheaper gas prices.

Wanting what I've got. Life is good!

I think that hoping for higher gas prices in the US is a lost cause at the moment. They just went to war to keep them low! It might be a lost cause here, too, but it's more realistic to look for it in Canada.

(I must admit, I don't really know what you are trying to get across)

I think we've drifted off-topic from Deals

In any case, adjusted for inflation, even with higher taxes we're now paying less for gasoline than we did a generation ago. That's one reason why gas-guzzling vehicles -- this time SUVs and minivans, last time large V8 land yachts and muscle cars -- are so popular.

I don't have as much of a problem with taxes as some folks but I bristle at governments who divert gas taxes to other purposes when, for example, public transit is being starved to death. We need solutions and building more roads into downtown Tronno from the GTA isn't one of them.

But we're digressing...
