The dog will shake its head, or tilt its head if just one ear is affected. The easiest way to tell is to sniff the ears. If they stink, they shouldn't.
The vet will usually give you drops like Otomax ointment or something. You can clean the ear, but go and see the vet for the drops. Mites are miserable for your pup and the drops will kill them and relieve his discomfort.
Thank you Vangie! The thing is, he is shaking his head, and scratching at his ears, but they don't smell funny. And now the cat is starting to do it too. I was wondering if anyone in here knew something I could do, because it is 2 hours to the nearest vet. I will take them if I have to, but the cat especially would not appreciate the ride.
Have you also though about giving the vet a call before driving so long? Maybe they can tell you more about what to do and if you should bring the Dog and Cat there.

Hi CurlyQ.. Here are some links to help you . By the sound of it, you should definately get them checked. Ear mites are contagious

Hope everything will be ok

Thanks Jahnisha! That really helps! For some moronic reason I hadn't considered calling the vet Maybe I'll have to stick a picture of little man in Christmas card!
